Wireless Headphones Are In!
Whether you have a pair of wireless headphones or not, I believe we’ve all experienced wireless headphones whether in person, online, or in an advertisement—or at least, we all have a general idea of what they are. Wireless headphones are headphones used to transmit audio without a physical connection of a wire, but with a wireless connection between the headphones and external device. But, did you know, there isn’t only one type of wireless headphone? For instance, you would think about the type of wireless headphone you want to purchase based on its intended use. Knowing the different types of wireless headphones is important to be able to utilize them for their full value.
Let’s explore two of the most common types of wireless headphones: wireless headphones creating a wireless connection using Bluetooth technology and wireless headphones creating a wireless connection using infrared (IR) technology.
Bluetooth Headphones
The most common type of wireless headphone is the Bluetooth wireless headphone. Bluetooth wireless headphones create a wireless connection between the headphone and external device that is Bluetooth-enabled. Bluetooth technology is a connection source used to exchange data wirelessly, over short distances from one fixed device (headphones) to an external device (phone, laptop, tablet, car, etc.) using Bluetooth technology. Bluetooth wireless headphones are able to connect with most external devices that are Bluetooth-enabled.
Bluetooth wireless headphones have different variations of appearance, size, and style, including: the appearance of an actual, connecting headphone extending ear to ear over the top of the skull covering both ears, individual earbuds inside of the ear, and a lightweight connecting headphone extending ear to ear across the back of the skull, open ear (bone conduction style).
Bluetooth wireless headphones is the most common type of wireless headphone due to their versatility in use and convenience. Without the need to connect your headphones using a wire, Bluetooth wireless headphones can be used for many hands-free tasks such as: intense workouts, cooking, cleaning, and even receiving calls! Some Bluetooth wireless headphones, while connected to your mobile device, have the ability to control certain functions on your mobile device with just the tap of the headphone or earbud. These functions include: answering calls, music playback options, and other functions.
Infrared (IR) Wireless Headphones
Infrared (IR) wireless headphones are headphones used to wirelessly connect to external devices using infrared (IR) technology. Infrared (IR) technology transmits audio signals in an exchange between the infrared (IR) wireless headphones and the external device using infrared (IR) light waves. This external device is typically any audio-based device utilizing infrared (IR) technology or has an audio/visual (A/V) source. These devices can range between cars, car DVD players, televisions, game consoles, etc.
Infrared (IR) wireless headphones are usually intended for a single-use purpose. The most common, single-use purpose is for transmitting audio from DVD systems installed in cars operating with certain infrared (IR) technology, to the infrared (IR) wireless headphone. Some infrared (IR) wireless headphones can also connect to cars also utilizing infrared (IR) technology. Infrared (IR) wireless headphones are also intended to connect to external devices not utilizing Bluetooth technology. This method usually requires purchasing an extended device to the infrared (IR) wireless headphone containing an audio/visual (A/V) source.
A gamer who intends to use headphones to play their game console and wants to connect their headphones using an audio/visual (A/V) source, would want to purchase infrared (IR) wireless headphones. Another good example is if you want to connect your headphones to your television that isn’t Bluetooth-enabled. You can purchase infrared (IR) wireless headphones and an extended device containing an audio/visual (A/V) source for the same effect.
Infrared (IR) wireless headphones have the appearance of an actual headphone extending ear to ear over the skull, covering both ears and has an audio/visual (A/V) source, versus Bluetooth wireless headphones which could have the appearance of a headphone extending ear to ear over the skull and covering the ears, wireless earbuds inside of the ear, or the bone conduction style which has the appearance of a thinner connecting headphone, extending ear to ear, over the back of the skull and is open ear.
